RYAN LOONEY | C-VILLE-athon Streakers
My favorite C-VILLE-athon race is the Sugar Hollow Bridges 10K. It's a small, homegrown race along the Moormans River, with 5K and 10K options. The course is beautiful and is one of the flattest courses I've ever run in Charlottesville! As if that weren't wonderful on its own, race entry includes a pancake breakfast. Proceeds go to the White Hall Ruritans scholarship fund.
The past year and half has seen me move twice and get promoted - happy things on the surface, but ones that brought their own particular stresses and challenges. Knowing I had to meet up with a group or a buddy to train and race, and knowing that I was helping some of my favorite area nonprofits with my race fees and volunteering helped get me out of my head a little bit, and stay connected to the people and community I love. Other info to share: -I'm a C-VILLE-athon streaker, and delighted to keep the streak alive! -My proudest running accomplishment is that in 2019 I came in last in two races! I'm proud to have been the lanterne rouge at this year's Sugar Hollow 10k, and a mile race at one of the All-comers Track Meets this summer. The party's in the back, y'all. See you at 10 miler training! |
The Sugar Hollow Bridges 10K is my favorite C-VILLE-athon race. Lovely course with a slightly downhill second half, and delicious breakfast afterward. The Bruce Barnes Mile is a close second - I love that it's so low-key. While the discomfort needed to run a mile fast is pretty unpleasant, it only lasts a few minutes.
Last year I wasn't able to run the 10 Miler, and I wasn't sure how I was going to make up my Cville-athon miles. I ended up running several races that were new to me. I never would have registered for them if I weren't trying to complete the Cville-athon. I had a great time out of my regular racing routine, and hope to run many of them again this year. I met some great people, and ran courses I'd never run before. It made my running world just a little bit bigger.
I work full time from home for a company based in London - usually I'm working in my home office by myself, so group runs and races are how I get to enjoy the company of fellow humans. I'm proud of the fact that I had hip surgery several years ago, was diligent in my rehab, and went on to PR in the marathon at age 40.
